Springwater was formed from Sparta and Naples on April 17, 1816. It is in the SE corner of Livingston County. It features rolling hills, the highest summits being 600 to 1,000 ft. above the valleys. The principal stream is the inlet of Hemlock Lake, which flows north through the town. The Cohocton River rises in the SE part of the township and flows south into Steuben County. Nestled within the township is the hamlet of Webster Crossing.
